Challenge: Multi-Image Compositions (Classic Editing*)
Camera: Olympus E-10
Location: Tracy, Ca
Date: Apr 22, 2003
Aperture: f10
ISO: 80
Shutter: 1/2
Galleries: Family, Humorous
Date Uploaded: Apr 22, 2003

I took this picture as a parody to the age old pictures of Courtship,Marriage, and Family. It was taken with flourecent lighting with a tripod. The two pictures on the left had an old copier lens added to the existing E-10 zoom so i could get closer. All taken in manual mode, no flash. I purposely wanted the slight oval to show so it would look more victorian. Two pictures were shot at f10 and the other at f11 with shutter speeds of 1/2 and 1/3 second.

Gary,
Thanks for the kind words for my poor Boldt Family. The rest of the story is that they had thir neighbors take some snap shots with their old Brownie and then pasted them to the fridge. They had trouble just getting the kids to pose let alone get them to group close enough not to cut off parts of their shinny little heads. You know nobody ever noticed that they stood on their heads for the big family shoot.
If I don't have fun doing this then it just isn't worth it. I am glad so many people enjoyed my humor and I am glad that it did as well as it did. My first tryptic by the way. I am going to try some serious ones one of these days.

Critique Club:

Hi Richard. I must confess when I voted on your pic in the challenge I didn't catch the story line until much later when I re-adjusted and I pushed up my original vote.

I think you have created a very humorous image which in my opinion was scored and placed much lower than it really deserved. Okay it isn't really a "wow" photo, but it is a photo with a lot of charachter and tells a continuing story, something which only a handful of photos in the challenge were able to do.

Technically, the layout and composition is good. The border is fitting to the image and the color scheme is also bang on. The lighting is excellent and I detect no dark areas and also now blown out spots. Setting up lighting for shiny objects is very difficult and you have mastered that here.

As was already commented below a couple of times, it is a pity that some of the bolt's heads are not fully visible in the third image. Perhaps if you had enlargened all the ovals a little more and increased the size of the overall image you would have gotten around that.

Also a tad more unsharp mask may have been necessary in my opinion to give the nuts and bolts a crispier appearance. They appear a little on the soft side.

Other than that this is a top multi-composition which, as I already mentioned, was extremely underrated.

What a great story. LOL. This was pretty funny. THe focus seems a bit soft on each photo though, more so in the very first photo on the way left. Lighting is quite nice, no annoying glares, or bad shadows. The angle is goos on the first 2, but I wish there were some way to not chop off the bolt heads in the far right photo. Overall a nice job! Good luck in the challenge.

Funny concept. But for this simple (and not inately interesting) of a subject, these macros need to be in sharper focus, and I would personally prefer more dramatic lighting or more contrast between subject and background. 5

Love the concept, and the layout! My husband was looking at this picture, and he thought it was kinda "sexy". One nitpicky comment: I wish the little bolts in the picture to the right weren't "cut off".

very fun and each individual photo is very well shot. this is also a very subtlely entered photo, with 1) mom and pop, 2) mom and pop DOING IT ON FILM!, 3) mom and pop w/kids. i wonder if everyone caught this . . .

The geometric shapes of the nuts and bolts don't seem to be in balance with the oval 'crops'
The nuts and bolts also seem to be crowded within the ovals.
I think this is a great idea... I would try some more post processing ideas, even though the challenge is done.

Let's hope your score doesn't make you say "awww nuts!"

LOL, yes Mr. Nut and Bolt, a well respected family.. and they made very nice child nuts and bolts also (right frame). :D You get an 8 for creativity.

You have done well with quite a dull subject, but some nice new shiny bolts may have looked better and the right hand pic could have been made smaller to fit the egg shape border.
