Greetings from the Critique Club
By Inspzil
Composition - My initial impression of this photo is that there is no face showing. Even with animals, it is generally better to be able to see their faces. The title tells us this is a defensive position which I totally understand, but it would've been a much better picture if maybe he was even just peeking over the top of the branch where we could see his face. The background is okay, the branches are blurred enough to be back there acceptably, however the little skinny branch in the foreground is not very welcome where it is. It would be much better without it.
Technical - The thing I like most about this is the DOF of the subject and the branches in the background. The exposure is good and the squirrel is in a pretty good place in the frame. A little higher wouldn't hurt but it certainly isn't a necessary thing.
Overall - This photo is not portraying the squirrel in its best light. I'd have like to have seen its little face peeking out with both eyes from behind the branch. I like to see animals taking on human characteristics. It gives us more connection to them IMO. The little branch is distracting in the foreground, but moving it is not the key to fixing this photo. Frankly I think that its not very compelling and there are no points of strong visual impact. Hopefully next time he gets himself out where the camera can see him, without him seeing the camera. Good luck on your future challenges. - BoB |

Another crop? to shift the squirrel off centre a bit and take advantage of the thick branches shap... The thin branches on the left are distracting. |

The branch across the front is in the way. Crop out the tangle of small branches, get in closer to the squirrel - its defensive position is interesting, making it look like part of the tree if it weren't for the flag of a tail. |
