Thanks John! And thanks to everyone who voted and made comments. I learned a lot about paying attention to my background and not just the subject...I realized that the rocking chair was there Sunday evening after I submitted. I knew it would get comments but I'm really proud of how the photo came out and how well it did..thanks to all. :) |

This is a nice image of the girl, the soft lighting on the face, flowing to the shadow on the right. The unsettling element is the view outside the window. It is distriacting and visually out of caracter with the expression on the girl's face. My guess is that this was a posed or at least a set up situation. Even if it were just eliminating the "stick" -probably the edge of a chair back on the porch- would help. Using the minimum DoF would also have helped. |

Not sure what the post is, but I'd get rid of it.Great lighting, bright and soft on subject. Vertical blinds add a nice frame. Even a few stray hairs show up well. |

Very expressive, effective grayscale. I little dark on my monitor -- I bet if looks really great at high resolution. |

Very pretty. I'm not sure what the item is just outside the window (a chair?) but I wish it weren't there. It looks, a little, like she's staring at it, but since I don't know what it is, I can't think of a reason for her to be looking at it. Whereas if it's not there, then she's simply staring out the window.... |

This is mostly really good but what is seen in the window is very distracting. This could be a classic case for using a circular polarizer filter. You should be able to turn the filter so the window reflects the image, which I think would be ideal here. Or else crop it so it is a portrait format to eliminate the window intirely. The light is gorgeouse on the girl. |

Nice photo. Good use of natural light. |

I really like the soft diffused lighting. Fwiw, my preference would be to use the 1.6 aspect ratio so I could crop tighter, less dark space on the right. Also, and I forget too, look at the background for distract from the picture like the poll or whatever it is outside the window. These things are minor; this is one of the top submitions, good photography. |

LOVE the use of B&W here. Especially powerful is the underexposed right-hand part of the photo. Too bad there's a screen in the window. Can't get over the wonderful use of light and dark here. |

Nice one. Now, just if you had removed this pole from the balcony.... But still, I like it! |

Nice and soft tone. Great balance. Sparkle in the eye. Just enough of a smile. I love it. |

Lighting is very good. Evokes a peaceful happiness. The only draw-back is the cylindrical object out the window that distracts your attention. 9 as is, 10 without the distraction. |

You've done a great job capturing the mood in this photo. A good choice for B&W. I like the way the light has created a twinkle in her eye. the object outside leaning against the balcony really ruins the entire feeling of the photo.
I did a quick crop into portrait (480 x 640), the left edge being the vertical panel of the window. Doing so also cuts some of the darkness on the right, leaving just her face. The eyes, nose and arm then create a nice diagonal in the photo, and what I feel is an even more compelling image. |

A bit noisy and dark ! But still one of my top raters! |

Lovely shot. Shows what window light can really do, especially on an angelic-looking kid, and the tonal range is very good. My one criticism is that if you could have moved that chair/broom thing in the window, it wouldn't look so much like she was happily gazing out at a wooden stick. |

i've changed my vote on this one twice. the more I come back to it, the more I like it. Great picture. Good use of b&w. I like the way you've caught the innocent expression on the girls face. |

Very cute. Using a wider aperature to obscure that backgound could improve the image and keep the focus on the face and eyes. |

i think this was very close to being a powerful image, the only thing that takes away from it (and it really is a very good photo), is the thing that looks like a chair outside the window. it takes away from the picture. but i really want to emphasize that this is a really good picture. |

This photograph is excellent... The look on her face makes me wonder what she is daydreaming about... Maybe she's planning her summer vacation from school? The light graduation from bright on the left to dark on the right is really nice also. In this particular photo, I wonder what it would look like in a vertical orientation cutting out the screened part of the window? Good work! = 9 |

Nicely conveys the mood, good job. For some reason the screen bothers me, I wonder how this would look with the screen removed. |

What an angelic look on this precious face. The window is a little bright in comparision, but it all works very well. |

Uhh, no comment. Crop the left 1/3 of the image out and it gets an 8 or 9 |

Love the younglady and the lighting, also the b&w is very good. My only negitive is the chair out the window, it's distracting. Over all this is a fine shot and her look is perfectly lovely. Good work. |

Very nice. I like the choice of black and white, as well as the soft focus. An even softer one might even be better, but I for one don't know how to do one = P Nice work - 8 |

Well executed, but please crop out the distracting brighter window and shovel handle to the left. (edit) : Takes away from the picture, but still sweet. |
