A couple people asked how I did this, so I will now tell you. :-)

For the colored lights I used (*drumroll...*) colored lights. A blue one on the right and red one on the left. The lights refract through the water in the glass making the wing-y things on the background (a piece of white posterboard), and the shadows are colored by the closer lights.

The white light was done using a flashlight pointed downwards into the glass and on the posterboard backdrop, and I moved the flashlight around some during the 15 second exposure to smooth the lighting out. The whole setup was improvised not pre-planned--I kept playing around with lots of different things, and this was the most interesting.

As always, thanks for the comments. :-)

The combination of shapes and colors give this an interesting kind of abstraction that draws the eye. I'm not sure about the "coloring" of the "contents" of the glass - it's kind of ghostly-eerie looking, but in it's own way adds to the the abstract feel. The centered composition feels a bit static, but overall I find the photo interesting.

I like the graphic quality of this image. I really like the two shafts of colored light on either side of the glass. The neutral gray tone of the glass does not work well for me. It seems a bit dull to me. I think a bit of dodging of the glass to lighten its color would have made this interesting image even better.

nice idea but the image does seem a little flat, I think you chose a difficult subject, good try

Really, really neat setup! With such strict symmetry, the only nitpicks would be the reflections on the glass itself. Also there seems to be a weird mottled-ness to the blue background- I think it's there in the red side too, but it's harder to tell.
