I never voted on "apple" but I can say I would have given above a 5.
It's probably several minor flaws that contributed to its downfall, the oof apple, the too pink hand, the funky piece of grass on the face, the odd blue triangle to the right....all "fixable" with some creative editing.
What's great about it? The composition. The animal's expression. The concept of interaction over the apple. The detail in the fur.

Darn, not up a tree, eh? Just calmly discussing who's gonna win the Apple-Tug!!!! Slipping, Slippy?!
Then again, there is that little evil eye mirroring murderous intentions. Ooops - never underestimate the Bull in your life!

I'm not sure what that thing is, but the expression is amusing. The colors seem very badly off, there's fringing at the edges of contours, and some kind of grass appears to have floated up in front of the image, which is very distracting. The focus also appears to be in an odd place (the fur on the head, and the aperture isn't small enough to carry it forward to the apple and hands.
