The above comment was made about a Minimalism photo submitted by Scott Bacon (sabphoto). The portion "then go voice your patriotism somewhere else" is uncalled for and against the rules. There is no reason to comment on the motives of the photographer as long as he is not violating the challenge or forum rules. The commenter owes Scott (and the rest of America for that matter) an apology. |

This shot was rushed and there for I forgot to stop and adjust my f-stop and work on getting the flag in focus not the sailor. The dull colors are due to the fact that I didn't realize my JTX LCD monitor at home is not at all calibrated and shows things brighter than they really are. I have since tried to calibrate it with failure being my only result. So now I send my submission idea here to work to view it on a CRT and adjust as needed. My next submission already looks better.
Thank you everyone for your comments, some were rude but all appreciated. Thanks...I'm learning from them |

I'm assuming that you are in the military yourself if you have access to the raising/lowering of the flag ceremony. Thank you and all your fellow sailors for your service. We as Americans owe you a huge debt of gratitude! As to the shot. Your colors seem very flat. What time of day was this shot? It looks underexposed. It's also very soft. Either the sailor or the flag seem like they should be in sharp focus. Witht the challenge subject and the title of your shot I would prefer the flag to be in focus. The colors may be fixable with photoshop. The sharpness issue requires a reshoot.

I like the idea, but I think that as far as "minimalism" is concerned, the story here is the sailor saluting the flag. The sailor is a very integral part of the picture. I think that the picture works, but not so much for minimalism. ~6 |

Have you tried cropping this in such a way to cut out some of the shoulder on left while keeping the rest? It might have been a little bit more dramatic |

The sailor just draws so much of my attention, I have a hard time seeing the flag as the focus of the picture. 5 |

good picture, captures emotion well, but could use something more to get the flag to stand out. Seems like sailor is main subject of this shot. |

I think this photo could use a bump in brightness and contrast. |

I can tell by the title that the flag is mean to be the subject of this photo. However, because of placement, it seems more like the background. If the soldier were standing behind the flag, I think that might be more effective. The flag also looks a little blurry, as if the focus was on the foreground. |

The sailor and his salute looks more primary than the flag to me, or they combine to make the subject. Nice idea though. |

the flag is blurry
there is something in the lower right coner
this is a dark picture which could be pushed, and saturated (especially in red)
in general i don't find the flag the subject of the image & therfore dont find it minlimalistic |

seems a bit dark to me. He is taking up more than a small area of the frame. good shot though |

The lighting in this shot is kind of drab. What time of the day was this? |

Minimal yes, but doesn't have the simple elegance I associate with minimalism. |

It looks a little dull, you might want to try adjusting the levels or the contrast. |

Having a Navy son, I can appreciate this image.
From the title I understand the subject to be the flag, but the image tells me the subject is the swabbie. |
