Challenge: In the Beginning... (Basic Editing III)

Due to the 1981 eruption of Kilauea (Hawaii's only active volcano), Kalapana, a once lush, thriving beach side jungle, is now reduced to a barren landscape of black and gray, crumbling lava rock as far as the eye can see. Only now has life begun to replenish itself in the form of small ferns, poking out between the cracks.
This photo is a tribute to the dozens and dozens of families who lost houses and loved ones on that faithfull day.
(not the original photo I wanted, but it will have to do :-))

| I'd just like you to know that I did not cheat on purpose. I had accidentally messed up the date on my camera, and I had only noticed it after the challenge began. I even requested an admid note for my stupid mistake. Oh well... thanks for the comments |

| Nice shot, especially for the challenge. Just a tip - with a bright sky like this in the background, expose for the sky (or at least a couple stops down) so you get more detail in the plume/smoke. You can adjust shadow contrast later in post-processing if the rocks turn out too dark. Or try just cropping out the sky altogether in this one. |

| This is a neat image. I like how it goes from a beautiful sky..to lovely mountains... to gloomy rocks and then a bright green plant. Its different but i like it. |

| Nice idea... this seems slghtly OOF and may have benefitted from a tighter crop since the slanted horizon is distracting. |

| I really like the composition here, but the blown out sky is a killer imho. It could've scored much higher otherwise |
