Partly inspired by my man, Jacko.
Set up = Kitchen table:
-Black backdrop, bass on bass stand, metronome on top of several phone books to hide stand, camera on tripod. Lighting is ambiant light (dim) of kitchen.
I set the metronome to several different beats before I figured out that it needed to be at 60 bmp in order to coincide with the 2 second exposure time. Apeture was F11.
I tried several lighting schemes before settling on a Jacko inspired technique. Since I had no cheap fan available, I used my trusty flashlight and flicked it on an off in rhythm to the beat. That's what gave me the five lit parts. I had to follow the "beater" with my flashlight to always have it lit. Took a few attempts to get it just right.
Slight cropping, rotation, brightness, contrast and saturation adjustments. Ran it through NeatImage to clean it up a bit, then some USM to sharpen it up. Add the border and VOILA!
If I had to do it over, I would use a strobe and synch it to the beat. It would produce several more exposures of the "beater".
For now this will have to do.

CClub.
Hi there
I have just read how you went about achieving this particualr shot. Before I read through it though I took a long hard look at your image and my instant thoughts were that you obviously took a lot of time and effort in your brilliant outcome.
Overall the photo is just fabulous. What caught my immidate attention was the movement of the timer itself. You have managed to achieve a high standard in the fact that the movement is spot on. I really like the composition, crop and lighting techniques that you have shown.
Honestly though, I just can't see any flaws to recommend you do it any other way, except that it is an awesome photo. Very well executed and framed. Well done on a brilliant job. |

The photo would be bland without the bass. Again, congrats. |

This should've won. I congratulate the smart ones that gave a ten, and I wonder where the four idiots who gave it a 2 came from.
The no-camera guys were almost a point lower than us camera guys...same old story.
Great shot, great set up.
Thanks for the in depth decription. |

the guitar is not needed in this shot, it confuses the composition, I think!! |

nicely done. Great subjects. I was wondering why the guitar was included into the shot, but I like the fact that it is included. Without the guitar this shot would be a bit bland. |

Fun image with the metronome and guitar together. I love the motion blur of the metronome. Lighting is just right, too. |
