All of these shots are beautiful but I think I prefer this pano crop best. I love the intense, warm colors. The little person on the rock really tops this off. Excellent! |

Thanks to all of you for the nice comments. Even though many of them were directed to Zoomdak (we both had a good laugh over that), it's still very nice to get so much positive feedback. It's also very nice to win a ribbon. I can feel my head expanding already! :)
FYI, I did not set out to fool anyone by doing a 'Zoomdak' photo. It just sort of worked out that way. I did take this photo on Cannon Beach, but I didn't go anywhere near Haystack Rock (Zoomdak Rock?). There were so many people around Haystack at the time that I doubt I could have gotten close enough to take a photo. It's a very popular place. I originally planned to do a Toyota billboard using a photo of my new Tundra parked on the beach with the sunset in the background. But the closest place that I know of where you can drive onto the sand was too far away for us to make it that day. So we stopped by Cannon Beach instead.
I gladly admit that Zoomdak's excellent photos of Haystack Rock did influence some of my decisions while taking this photo; and in the post-shot editing too. He is a very talented young man, and I have no doubt that we'll be seeing even more ribbons on his profile page in the future. I just wonder who I'll have to be to win my next ribbon. So, how far is Iceland from Oregon? :)

Oswald West, former governor of Oregon, declared the Oregon beaches to belong to all the people, forbidding anyone to claim one grain of sand from the high tide line out to sea, from Astoria to Brookings as private property. This billboard is in that same spirit, welcoming all inlanders to come out to dream, to soak up the beauty of the north Oregon Coast. I love the child on the rock, putting perspective and human story into the scene. The golden glow is extraordinary. By the way, the larger rock in the photo is known locally as Lady Rock. It's either Lady or Lincoln, I get the two confused. Congrats on the ribbon, Michael. Thanks for a great billboard! |

What is this - the fifth ribbon for this beach ? That's gotta be a record for a single location :). I've gotta say, this is up there with some of zoomdak's best shots of this beach, which is certainly an achievement considering you havent had half the practise he has :P.
Congrats! |

Return for comment. Beautiful shot, wonderful light and sillouettes. I wonder if it might have been better though to crop more on the left, so the partial rock isn't even there. The predominant focal point is still the big rock even with the person there, and I think even more off center would be great. Still, a beautiful shot to be proud of. Bumping way up. |

Beautiful shot. Love the whole silhouette effect ya got going on here, but at 65 miles an hour I'm not sure that folks will even notice the little guy standing there and your message may be lost on the viewing public.

My evaluation method of this challenge is as follows:
1. Did you catch my eye while I was driving by? Yes.
2. If I didn't catch the text while I was driving, did you intrigue me enough to look for this billboard again? hmm.... not sure.
3. Did you sell your stuff to me? If I got to read the test I might be considering buying.
4. Extra thoughts: Beautiful shot. Bright and eye catching. The kind I would enjoy looking at, after a long day at work, on my way home.
But sunsets are corny and not exactly representing one place or another.
most likely I would forget the picture after driving away.
If I saw this while standing at the traffic lights, I would probably be interested in a trip to Oregon. So I give you a 7 for a beautiful photo. |

Silky smooth, seductive shot - well composed, but just slighty over-dodged around figure and rock. Why? It doesn't seem necessary. |

maybe as a photograph, but not as a billboard...it's a bit too centered. also, at 60 mph, that person would barely be noticed. great colors and contrast. maybe if you had someone on a bed out there this might have a stronger tie to 'dreamers'... |
