The first idea I had when reading what this challenge was was to take a shot straight down onto a mug full of colorful artist brushes. Unfortunately without going out and buying a bunch of brushes there wasn't enough color in the shot for my taste. That's where the paint came into play. Very simple arrangement. I am actually pretty happy overall with how the shot turned out.

Greets from the Critique Club!

Initial Impression:
Busy.. No good place to rest my eyes, color (or lighting) seems a bit flat.

Challenge:
Meets the challenge perfectly

Composition:
I like the idea behind this photo alot. The same goes for most of the composition. The diagonal of the paintbrush and the diagonal created by the paint drops are particularly effective for me. However, the other items clutter up the photo.. in particular the brushes and the paint bottle lying down. For the photo to really work one of these should probably have been removed.

Technical:
The technical work is good. I wish the brushes were more in focus though. The colour seems to be a bit odd - the yellow and reds don't really "pop", they're rather muted. I half wish they were more saturated, but I like them as they are now as well.

Overall:
A technically good photo that just needs a little work to make it really capture and hold the viewers interest.

A very busy image. Simplification and sharper focus are in order.

Wonderful composition, the detail is very good. I especially like the DOF here with the brushes in the jar being blurred. The lighting is bang on, good shot.

Complicated but well done on composition - but the white top of the red paint really distracts for me - had a moment of 'what's that?' going on.

Nice use of limited DOF.
Composition feels unbalanced/ scattered to me.

I have problem finding the point to look at, the unfocused brushes in the foreground get too much in the frame, IMO.

For me, it would have been a tough decision to focus either on the paint (as you did) or the standing brushes. Great shot.

Interesting Choice

Greater depth of focus so that the paint containers are also sharp would improve the photo.
