This is the shadow of a gate a couple hundred meters from my house. I noticed it earlier in the week and took many shots but couldn't get one I liked.

I finally got this one by standing on the left hand pillar with my camera attached to my folded up tripod. I set the camera on timer mode, tripped the shutter release, then extended the camera via the tripod out over the top of the gate. I repeated this about 15 times until I got a shot I was reasonably happy with.

My neighbors now think I'm crazy.. so this better be worth it!

Greetings from the Critique Club :)

Hi Mbardeen...

This is an interesting abstract photo and I also think that the choice of black and white enhances the image... it brings out the contrasts and makes the light/shadows the primary interest in the image. I also believe you had a good eye to catch this as a subject for 'from above'. When I first viewed the image, it took me a while to determine the angle and what I was really looking at. This could be the source of your sub-5 score as well. Unfortunately, I don't believe that a majority of the voters on DPC really give each photo adequate time when voting.

The shadows created by the gate provide a good deal of interest, but there is also a LOT of interest and my eye keeps wandering around inside the photo and never really comes to rest on some specific subject or point of interest. The gate shadow is intricate and detailed. I'm not sure how to suggest any improvement on this particular subject other than possibly working with a smaller piece of the image that you have captured here.

Keep up the good work :)

I like the texture of this photo.

Pretty good concept. I have hard time seein the 'from above" As a photograph, I subject to be spread across too much of the image - meaning I can't take my eye to anything in particular. Maybe compose on a smaller area.
Addendum: Thanks for your message - I see it now. Pretty good. I'm bumping up the score a couple of notches.

Fantastic idea, great shot. It took me a little while to realise this wasn't just a shot of a pair of gates but of the shadow they cast! Really crisp detail on the shadow. This deserves a very high place in my opinion 9.
