I have always had a fondness for B/W photography ever since 1965 when developed and printed my first. B/W is one of the most artistic, creative, and powerful mediums within photography.
Within this photograph there is soft range of gradation of b/w/grays that works well complementing the soft texture of the background and subject. The background although a soothing texture maintains an inanimate coolness offset by the warmth of the subject. Capturing the moment, the magic of still photography, is accomplished well. A wonderful clarity of gaze on a face giving few clues of expression pulls this soft and gentle photograph together.
This photograph merits a 9.

i don't know anything about portraiture, so i'm using your image as a guinnea pig as to what i think i would or wouldn't do in this situation, as well as what i notice and get out of your image.
i think one of toughest aspects of portraiture is to capture the essence of an individual, without unnecessary props. you certainly have done that here! great job. the lighting, pose, composition, background, exposure--they all come together to make this image. good work! |

Returning for comment:
Lovely hair and great expression to give the viewer enough information to capture the essence. I would have cropped this right below the chin for a more highly defining feel. Bumping up. |
