 Dried seed pods overwinter on the ground after falling from the tree limbs: each is nearly a perfect sphere, very prickly, releasing the seeds through the dark openings seen above. As the months go by and spring re-greens the earth, the pods turn more gray and slowly degrade. The laying side-by-side suggest a figure eight.

At first I couldn't see any numbers anywhere, I was looking too much into the photo when I should have been looking at the whole outline of the pods. Good job!
