Challenge: Where's Waldo? II (Basic Editing II)
Camera: Canon PowerShot G2
Location: Lycée Hubert Clément Esch, G-D of Luxembourg
Date: Jan 4, 2005
Aperture: F/2,0
ISO: Auto
Shutter: 1/13 sec.
Galleries: Interior, Architecture
Date Uploaded: Jan 4, 2005

Idea:
My initial idea was to have somebody hiding cartoon-like with his head in a lamp-screen, a picture of somebody hiding without any success. Because of various obstacles I changed my mind and took some pictures of staircases instead. The shots have been made in my secondary school Lycée Hubert Clement Esch. The model is my friend and classmate Yorick. He had to run up and down three different staircases, each a few times. He was incedibly patient with me (it was about lunchtime!).

Setup:
This staircase is in the older part of our school. I stood on the lowest stairs in the cellar and send Yorick up to the second floor, from where he was to look down at me. I had to wait a little until there were no other students in the picture anymore, then I leaned over the railing and took half a dozen of pictures. The one I submitted was the very last one I had token.

Post Processing:
Rotated counter-clockwise 90 degrees. The picture is slightly tilted on purpose. Straightening it (1 degree) made it look 'wrong'...
Cropped to fit some rule of thirds, to give the 'frames' the strongest possible effect and to draw the eye immediately towards the center.
brightness/contrast
hue/saturation to push the red colour, desaturated yellow channel (the shadows were yellow...strange)
resize to 640x484,
USM (0,55/150/1)

Comments: Considering the entries from the first 'Where's Waldo?' challenge, I think Yorick should be less visible. I slightly missed the challenge because you don't have to search for him, but it's not that bad. You can't even see him in the thumbnail.
Today I also experienced myself what others have talked about in the forums. While I stood in the cellar, someone from the stuff asked what I was doing down here and threw a suspicious look at me. I admit that I might have told them, but there were only five minutes of my lunch break left...
I also considered flipping the image to make it more abstract. I'd then have called it 'Falling Frames', but I didn't know how the voters would react to a flipped image with a person in it. After struggling some time with myself, I decided to leave the picture unchanged.

Well, yeah, he's a little obvious :-), but this is a really cool photo on it's own. I really like the colors, and the shapes and lines. And the person adds a lot of interest to an already cool image, IMO. Nice job.

This photo would be a cool choice for the Architecture challenge coming up. For Waldo, I think Waldo is a tad bit too obvious.

That's a neat color scheme on the stairs. I think this waldo needs to go back to camoflauge school, though...

This photo doesn't particularly suit the challenge for me, but I very much like looking at it. The lines, shapes, and vibrant colors really draw me in. 6

Interesting shot, well composed. The red adds some nice framing and focuses the attention on the person. The person is not very well "hidden", but it still is a nice shot.

I like your use of the shape of the building to make a frame. The color is striking too.

Great scene but the figure is far from lost.
