Challenge: From the Ground Up (Classic Editing)
Camera: Canon PowerShot G2
Location: These are the stairs in my house.
Date: Apr 27, 2002
Aperture: F2.5
ISO: 50
Shutter: 1"6
Date Uploaded: Apr 28, 2002

Taken at 04/27/2002 23:53, I spent all day taking pictures and took these fooling around after I had called it quits for the day. I used the macro setting to get some of the stairs more in focus than others. Some of the other shots did this better than this one, but this one came out the best overall. I used a longer shutter speed setting to compensate for no lighting.

Thanks for the great comments, guys! I learned a few things on this one. I thought the manual focus would work better than it did. Next time, I'll have that first stair be in-focus. I dont know why I put the tilt in there. I guess I was just playing around too much. I'll kill it next time :) And people, do not make fun of my stairs! *I* like them! :) I'm going to come to y'all's houses and tell you how bland your stuff is. Sheesh :) You can make fun of the walls, though, if you want, because they are different colors. Seriously, I think it was just the lighting from the living room messing with things. And yes, the stairs go up, but if it makes you think MC Escher to look at them and think down, maybe I can figure out a way to emphasize that more... :)

Should be From the Carpet Up ......

I'd say to pick a side of the fence on this picture -- straighten the angle or push it further. It just seems like indecision or lack of time spent on the shot.

cool shot

Subject matter is a little bland. There seems to be a slight tilt too.
05/03/2002 02:56:00 PM
Yes, a cliche.
05/03/2002 06:53:00 AM
At first glance, this looks almost like a set of stairs to a basement.
05/01/2002 09:05:00 PM
cool

Sorry, just doesnt look like you put much time or effort into this shot. Try using a greater depth of field and finding a more interesing staircase.
04/30/2002 04:10:00 PM
keep your hand out of there
04/30/2002 12:52:00 PM
I have no problem with it being a cliche but its just badly taken, couldn't you find any nicer stairs than this?
04/30/2002 07:12:00 AM
I'm only guessing, but are the colors of the walls and door off? The interesting thing, to me, about this one, is the way it almost looks like you're looking down a stairwell instead of up....
04/30/2002 07:01:00 AM
I'm sure you get comments for and against it, but I'll suggest it anyway: I would crop out that first out of focus step.
04/30/2002 04:49:00 AM
Freaky looking stairs. :)
04/29/2002 07:53:00 PM
HA! This isn't cliché. Try harder next time! I consider this a fun photo because of the added interest of the door. I want to know that is there. I want to tip toe towards that door. Would shooting it vertical have gotten more of the door? I would have considered cropping the first step and rotating just a tad to straighten the photo. I'm sure you considered rotating it 90 degrees clockwise, right? <winks> I also think this photo was begging to be B&W for the added suspense. The color and design in the carpet is great for a B&W. Overall - good job on meeting the challenge and providing an interesting photo. I won't take points off for failure to live up to your title. :)

I like the subject, but you missed on your call! I didn't see any other staircase shots. Suffering from poor lighting though, and the bottom looks out of focus
04/29/2002 06:06:00 PM
Nice idea, just don't care for the colors.
04/29/2002 01:24:00 PM
wow that carpet screams mental home
04/29/2002 10:10:00 AM
Right on! Very intense!
04/29/2002 09:12:00 AM
Interesting idea, ugly carpet. It might work better if there was light coming through the door.
04/29/2002 08:06:00 AM
You thought this would be a cliche, when in fact it stand alone. Nice.
04/29/2002 07:08:00 AM
Hmm... nice textures, nice lighting, good composition and depth of field. The open door creates a kind of tension or narrative. It just doesn't seem to say enough to be interesting though... hard to explain.
04/29/2002 06:23:00 AM
if you know that you are going to take a cliche pic, do a better job next time of keeping the pic straight and the front part not in focus needs to go.
04/29/2002 06:10:00 AM
The title doesn't save this one.
04/29/2002 05:05:00 AM
could be a good black& white ? bring out the texture on the carpet.
04/29/2002 04:47:00 AM
I like the composition, and the open door at the top. I think I wish the door were more in focus though. Also, I think it's a little off horizontal.
04/29/2002 04:11:00 AM
I was hoping to see stairs. I like this but I feel the bottom blur or degree of blur distracts from it:( Still, all in all....it's a nice picture:)
04/29/2002 03:42:00 AM
I don't find this shot to be 'cliche'... I really wish that term would abandon this site. it's getting old already. This shot is a good interpretation of the transition. The first step being out of focus is a little distracting to the shot. A little more depth of field would have also brought the door at the top of the stairs into sharper focus. The angle of the camera in this shot doesn't accent the stairs as much as I would like to see... otherwise, nice shot!
04/29/2002 01:00:00 AM
I keep thinking this is pointing downstairs towards a door in the ground ... kinda like something Escher would do. I like this alternative reality :)
04/28/2002 11:13:00 PM
I'm just thinking about how it would be awkward to have a door at the top of the stairs, especially one that opens twords you as your walking up. Knowing my clumsiness, I'd knock myself straight down the stairs trying to open the damn thing.
04/28/2002 08:24:00 PM
nioe some one beat you and they did a better job
