Hello from the Critique Club!

With regards to despair -- this image says more 'fear' to me than it does despair, two very different emotions. I wouldn't lower your score, though, because this could result in despair afterwards (ie, the victim's widow would despair).

At first glance, this is a powerful image. It gets your attention right away! After that initial reaction, I think some improvements could be made with the composition. In general, I don't like the main subject to be in the center of the frame. I would have liked it better if the barrel of the gun were more to the left and up a little (maybe in the upper left 1/3). That would bring more of the hand into view. I realize the end of the barrel is the main attraction here, but I feel the photo would have more balance if more of the hand were shown. It seems 'cutoff' to me.
I really like your choice of focus and depth of field. As I said earlier, the end of the barrel is the main attraction, and your choice of focus and DOF really succeeds here. Lighting on the end of the gun is perfect. I also feel you have just the right amount of light on the hand. I'd like to see a little more light on the right side of the gun--not very much, just a little. Maybe a reflector card rather than another light source.

I like the black background, and the shape of your composition. It is a nice use of negative space.

I hope you find these comments helpful. Good luck in future challenges!

This is a good concept. The photo could be a little sharper. If it were it would bump you up a point or 2. LIke the lighting and DOF. Great job with those.

...and it looks like a cycloptic puppy with no ears, smiling.

Been there done that, didn't wet my pants!!! Scary shot, but not quite dispair, very close though. Focus is very sharp on the barrel. Color seems fine. Nice amount of negative space. 7 Swash

Better subject than a syringe. Perhaps some sort of reflection happening on the side of the gun will give the metal a bit more of a metal and mean look. Something about the hand is also distracting me.

Needs more light/focus on the hand. The muzzle itself isn't a strong enough subject in my opinion. Plus the muzzle should be in the upper left corner (rule of 3rds) with hand in the lower right.

This image cries out for more! It's empty and emotionless without any quality of human expression. I see aggression, anger, 007, not despair, sorry.

Interesting perspective. Could use more DOF though, so the hand was in focus. Can't see the despair though?

i would have liked to see a little less of blank space on top and more of the gun/hand. nice lighting.

I can see malice, hate, or desperation at the end of this, but not despair. Effective photographic presentation, though.

More like fear then despair

Wo, scarey! I wondered if anyone would do one like this and you are the only one I have seen with a gun! I like the little tilt of the gun which really does a lot for the whole photo. I think without that tilt this photo wouldn't have half the impact it does. The lighting is ideal, I love it. You'll do well with this one, good luck.

Although I see how you can imply despair with this image, to me, it just comes over as an act of aggression. Technically, I feel that as the gun is very angular, it needs to be upright rather than leaning to the right. Otherwise it's a good image.
