Challenge: Despair (Classic Editing)

Used a timer, ran to bench, looked despairing.

This may not do well because of the stark contrast, but I thought that was an effective way of getting across the feeling. And there's nothing more negative than negative space...

Nice shot. The only thing I could suggest would be to rid the photo of the footprints in the bottom left. They detract from the simplicity of the snow. Perhaps try 'jumping' into frame from the left next time?

Thank you for your critique, John, I was really pleased that this photograph was appreciated the way I intended.

Greetings from the Critique Club :)

I think this is an excellent photo and it seems to have scored very well also. I really like the sharp contrast. It seems to set the mood for 'despair' very nicely in this image. The feeling of loneliness is very strong in this image and that suppports the theme of 'despair' as well. There is just enough detail in the man's face to really make this photo pop.

I don't think I could offer you any suggestions for improvement on this photo because I like it just the way it is :)

Thank you all for commenting. I did indeed have a cold, wet butt.

woulda been nicer if it were better focused and maybe framed a little differently (if it were possible)... maybe with the subject taking up a smaller portion of the frame with a larger field of white to the right.

I like the composition. Snow is so hard, but I would have liked more detail in the dark figure.

nice, good value

The stark contrast adds to the "despair" feeling in this shot I think. Excellent work.

good job! Even the black boarder works!

Really good image. The black and white colors really help alot to get the feeling of isolation across. There is also nothing in the background except the color of white which sort of plays off that his life may be heading no where or in the wrong direction. Very powerful image.

Very nice composition. Good portrayal of despair. The focus is a little too soft (IMO) but works for the theme. The contrast is too high (IMO) as the snow from the bench just blends into the background snow. Nonetheless, good job.

Well composed and cropped. I bet he had a cold butt from sitting in the snow.

This is a very striking image. I really like your composition and the high contrast. It adds a lot of drama. I also like how the gentleman is leaning out of where he is framed in the photograph - I think that helps add to the "despair" theme.

Poorly focused, otherwise a good shot.

Simple, bold, direct. I'm glad you chose to have him up left. So close to the edge suggests that he is trapped.

Good shot for despair

The fact that this is NOT tack-sharp makes the pic; esp. with the title!

(Don't you hate when you get cold, wet buns like this?)

I like it. Too bad it wasn't a bit sharper
