 I learned a valuable lesson when taking pictures of homeless people for the despair challenge - don't do it again.

While photographing a group of homeless loitering at a bus stop one wild-eyed guy suddenly ran strait at me demanding to know why I was taking his picture.

It dawned on me he might be a criminal on the run or drug addict who would just as soon destroy my camera and/or kill me than be caught. I was undecided which would be worse.

I convinced him I deleted his picture from the camera, but at the time I was far to frightened to remember how.

The actual subject in this image was OK with having his picture taken.

I thought the gainy appearance conveyed the desperate conditions under which the homeless live.

The grainy effect makes it look really gritty and urban. The tone also matches it perfectly. My choice for number one!

why the grain? the sepia tone is enough... maybe up the contrast a little too.

I like the shadows of the fence on this guy's trousers and jacket. The photo is a little too grainy for me though, but it has charachter.

I think it must be me, but I don't get a feeling of despair from this. It's probably due to the gentleman being upright - standing tall. The grain effect is appropriate for this image, but the sepia tone doesn't feel quite right. I think it's because sepia is usually the colour of old photos, but this has very modern elements in it:- the buildings, wide empty road and the shopping trolly.

I like the image, and grain is a good idea, though I find that this looks like you added grain rather than let grain appear?if that makes any sense.
