 It was so hard to get this shot because for minimal editing I had to be in close and the cardinals are very timid. I would like to have cropped this to show more detail in the feathers. I used flash because I had to wait for the bird to land on the spot I had prefocused on and the lighting was more consistent so that I didn't have to constantly readjust the setting to the changing light conditions. Also, since the challenge was asking for one color I thought it would be interesting to be able to highlight the red and darken the backround by using flash in the early morning. So I sat and waited very still and quietly for him to show up. Finally, just before I was about to give up on the 4th morning he finally decided to cooperate! I know that some people will not like the use of artificial light for a nature photograph but I like the effect!

and the flash was perfect to get the affect/light you wanted ..
