CRITIQUE CLUB
As much as I would love to shed light on why this didn't do better, I don't know if I'll be much help because I really love this. I'll try to be a little nit-picky and see if I can help you out a bit.
LIGHTING: Brilliant, actually. Your lighting has no flaws at all...there is a tiny bit of "over-shine" that appears to be from a flash on the middle right. Again, that is just being nitpicky.
SUBJECT: Fascinating. I have never seen one of these before, so it definitely caught my eye and made me stare for a long time.
TECHNICAL: You obviously took a great deal of time making your technical settings perfect. There are no flaws there that I can see.
CHALLENGE: Definitely yellow enough, but the transformation to green may have thrown some people.
OVERALL: Okay, here is my honest opinion. If you look at the winners of yellow, they all caught very "yellow" moments. Most people equate yellow with warmth, serenity, and happiness. As interesting as this flower is, it's a bit harsh and earthy. As awesome as the shot is, it just doesn't "feel" yellow (warmth, etc). If you'll notice, there was a shot called "A yellow way to escape". Everything in that shot was perfect, but a noose doesn't necessarily give you a warm feeling. I think it was the same here. As gorgeous and well-thought out as this print is, I think it would do MUCH better in another category...especially one that evokes curiosity or interest. I don't think your score had anything to do with the photo, but more from the overall feeling of yellow....totally my opinion!!! |

Hi Swash...I gave you a 5...composition is great, the background gives the subject a dramatic impact. My concern was with the thick greenish stems(?)in the upper right and lower right corners..I would have cropped them off. Sorry it didn't do well. Mine didn't either. |

O.K. if anybody would care to be honest or mean or "pick your descriptor" and tell me. What is really really bad about this photo?
No distracting background; it meets the challenge; focus isn't horrible; lighting isn't great, but it's not horrible; it's a flower, but not a boring, uninteresting one - pick another issue.

Weird and unearthly, this photo is not only about yellow, it speaks to me that yellow can be fascinating and interesting. The pure void in the background is a perfect backdrop for the ever interesting textures. The focus or sharpness could possibly be better, but this is a nice photo for me. |

Good shot - though I'm not quite sure what I am looking at (hope that doesn't make me incredably oblivious), it definately meets the challenge, the composition is good and the focus and colors are good as well! |

wow the lighting is incredible! I love the contrast and color as well... and how the contrast and brightness washed out any background to get in the way... nice use of the negative space... my only complaint is I would like to see sharper focus... perhaps making sure the lens is at it widest angle? maybe a higher Fstop?? or how about backing up a little? I know that helps me focus in on macros sometimes... or how about a tripod? not sure which of these if any ideas are right, just guessing.... let me know ok? good luck! (I picked up a +7 and +10 filter for the sony at Circuit City) they really help when getting this close (7) |

This is absolutely beautiful. Is it considered to be a flower, or a plant. I love it. This should be number 1. It is a fantastically done photo, plus it is so unique. You nailed this one. Congratulations on your 10. |
