 Thinking "way outside the box" on this challenge (something I don't normally do): I shot this in my family room, not England. =]

I carved some blocks out of styrofoam, painted them black, and set them up in front of my TV, which was displaying the background picture. (I wonder if anybody else will photograph a "model" of a landmark for this challenge?!)

Luckily, there was a full moon just before this challenge started, so at least the nearly-full moon (which obviously makes for a more dramatic picture) is somewhat plausible. I'm guessing some people will comment on the moon looking "too big", but that can be explained by the famous "Moon Illusion". =]

Still, I'm not entirely happy with the way it turned out (to me, it looks fake because of the lack of any moonlight reflecting off "Stonehenge" or the ground, but maybe some voters won't notice). As usual, I waited 'til the last day to shoot my idea. Then I had to wait too long for the paint to dry on the styrofoam. So... I didn't have time to try and fix anything. I also would have liked to Photoshop the moon to an off-center location in the background picture, but again, no time. I'm submitting it anyway so I can at least click the [update] button all week...

this is awsome
its creepy-ish
but it looks totally real untill i read what you posted about not enugh light on the ground and i noticed it looked somewhat fake but everything is amazing and its all fake GREAT job im adding this to my favorites

What a great idea. The effects of the TV sky add just enough softness to link up to the foreground. Creativity pays sometimes, the other times, it is just a good idea.

I really enjoyed your photo/composition (see comments during voting). Last night at the library I was thumbing thru an older version of "The Joy Of Photography" and came across a photo by Pete Turner taken in 1980 that I thought you would find interesting (it was a bugger to find on the internet). Getty Images has it...here's a URL that should display it, if not the image number is 202780, or search under Pete Turner and it comes up on the first page (of 26!).

this takes photography to another level because of the thought going into the setup. i think the actual 'photography' element was secondary on this one... great work overall!

LoL it only looks fake to you cause you know you created an illusion and a good one at that. Its very good! Look out Hollywood maybe you could show em a few tricks in the movies!

For reference, in the case you describe, that SC member does not participate in voting on their own image or in any private SC discussions related to the legality of the image.

You know you're awfully close to a DQ on this rule:
Artwork. Literal photographic representations of existing works of art (including your own) are not considered acceptable submissions, however creative depictions or interpretations are permissible. This includes, but is not limited to paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, computer artwork, computer monitors, and televisions. A literal representation is one which is composed in such a way as to compel the voter to rate only the work of art represented and not the artistic decisions made by the photographer (e.g., lighting, composition, background elements, etc).

probably with 2 different artworks, you're OK

Edit:
just out of curiosity, what happens when a SC is req for DQ?

Edit #2: you should probably rename it to TV Moonrise of Styrofoamhenge :)

First off... thanks for all the great comments, both during and after the challenge!!

I was a bit disappointed after I got done taking the shots for this challenge. I had this "vision" in my head for a few days, and I was a little bummed-out when I finally saw the results on the PC... it just looked kinda "fake", and to make it worse, I didn't have a clue what to do to "fix" it. With time running out, I almost didn't submit, but then convinced myself that since Stonehenge probably wasn't that well known photographically, it might be all right. Needless to say, when I checked my score the next morning and saw it was at 6.9, I was pretty excited!

As might be expected, DQ requests came in for this shot almost immediately...

Thats a great idea- when i first saw your photo - i was like - lucky feller - lives in england and takes a pic of the stone henge and includes the blooming moon aswell.

To be honest, I really don't like the "set up" aspect of photography and I think it's interesting that the attitude on this site seems to be more about the end than the means BUT:

When you're this good, EddyG you need to flaunt it, baby!!

and there i was about to phone english heritage and the national trust about trespassers in the dead of night ;) completely got me - i've actually been there a couple of times, and i was totally convinced by your shot. totally excellent shot, and great display of lateral thinking - you should work for NASA or something...

How did you shoot around the fence? :) Great shot of the moon against this landmark (small nit but would like a bit more definition on the right against the sky) as presented one of my ribbon picks this challenge BOL

this is beautiful. how do you get the moon so clear. Guess my lens is not strong enough. The moon only looks like a big glow of light with out definition like this one. I use a tripod, etc. but I cannot get any where near this shot.

Challenge link: strong - you deserve much credit for the capture alone.

Image critique: a powerful image and a dramatic subject. I think the processing has been pushed too far, rendering Stonehenge a bit too indistinct. Moon looks good - perhaps a little too central - but its's large and eerie.

Out-of-challenge appeal: I've reviewed this and I like it more each time, although the quite harsh processing is my only niggle.

Wow, great site and capture. Catching a moon rising over anything is a nice accomplishment. Catching the moon rising over Stonehenge is nearly mythic. The stones are beautifully silhouetted, the clouds look surreal. But the moon looks oddly out of place somehow. I'm not sure what I'm trying to say. I like it though and gave you a 7.

I am speechless. This is absolutely stunning and an instant winner in my book. I am interested in hearing your story for this shot. What strikes me most is the clarity of the moon set against the background of clouds. Did you boost the levels of the clouds to bring out more of the shadow details?

I think the position in the sky as well as the centered composition really works well here.

Obviously the color is delicious. Couple that with Stonehenge and the moon in perfect color. The only thing that would have made this a 10 is the moon being higher up and maybe to the left or right. I guess you could have hung around for another hour or so...
