three more days of voting - avg vote 6.9 - and I feel the urge to justify myself…

Voters probabaly thought this is one of [user]P-A-U-L[/user]'s shots of Skomer Island since he wrote in a thread about it.
And now it's just me... taking advantage of the fact that Paul took a lot of awesome pictures there… but this was not my intention at all! This is just my best shot of a puffin so I submitted it at the free study. The overlapping with Paul's thread was a coincidence and mere luck for me since it looks like this picture might end up with a quite nice average vote.

This shot was actually taken on Skellig Michael, a very small island off Irland's south west coast (a mind-blowing beautiful place by the way) which I visited on a vacation in June.
Skellig Michael is not only famous because of an ancient monastery on top but also for filming parts of Star Wars Episode 7 and 8 there and for it's bird population.

It was the first time I came so close to puffins and I loved the experience. They weren't shy at all and they made the most adorable sounds you can imagine - a mixture of a low cooing and mooing sound, very unique.

Indeed...it took about an hour to get there and you better don't get seasick easily...
The way back was even worse due to more wind.. about one and a half hour. We were given kind of wetsuits to cover ourselves from sea foam.
But we were lucky - on Skellig Micheal itself we had sunshine and we were the last boat to depart back to the coast. So we had the wonderful experience to see the island almost deserted from tourists. There are about 10 boats with about 10-12 people landing each day.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that you can make the trip. If the sea is too rough they might cancel the tour.

Superb puffin photo! I have a booking for a boat to Skellig Michael in the summer holidays but unfortunately the puffins will have likely all flown away by then. What was the boat trip like - I hear it can be quite rough?

you puffin photographers have THE BEST birds to shoot ..
their faces have so much personality .. and their colouring is so unique ..
