Loading of nuclear fuel in the Fort Calhoun Station on the Missouri River in Blair, Nebraska, began in May 1973. In October, 2016, operators there powered down the reactor for the last time. Though the power station was the smallest in the nation, at its peak it accounted for 25% of OPPD’s (Omaha Public Power District) net generation capabilities. In October, 2016, operators there powered down the reactor for the last time. Workers at the plant continue to monitor the spent fuel pool while radioactivity burns off.
