My Dad was captured in Belgium during WWII, finally surrendered when surrounded in a farmhouse by German soldiers. That's when he went missing (in re the newspaper article).

He spent the remainder of the war (about 6 months) in a German prison camp. The spoon was issued to him as a prisoner by the Nazis, with which to eat his meals while in captivity. The insignia is obvious on the handle if you zoom in.

The letter was written to his family during the war, before his capture.

He came home at the end of the war, with a shrapnel scar and some emotional issues, married my mom, had 3 kids and a successful local furniture store until his death in 1979 at age 57.

Dad was a pacifist, so going to war was more than a little traumatic for him...in more ways than one. He suffered bouts of PTSD and depression throughout his life. But, to all who knew him, he was a saint. Spent much of the rest of his life doing community service and loving us unconditionally.

He died 38 years ago on June 15. I miss him more than I can say. He was the finest person I have ever known. Ever.

Thanks, everyone, for your lovely comments and votes! So much incredible talent here. I'm honored to be among you.
