 I roast my own coffee beans from green beans. These are Ethiopian Harrar Longberry beans that I like to roast dark. Actually the ground coffee on the right is some old ground stuff that I had laying around as it is not really dark enough if I had ground it. The coffee maker on the right is called a French Press which I use occasionally. I usually use a drip Coffee Maker. The Grinder in the middle is only a prop as well. I use a burr grinder which uses less friction and doesn't burn the beans. That is your coffee lesson for the day!!

Critique Club Assignment:

Composition: Alot of elements. Alot to look at... too much possibly. For instance.. A coffee cup with the progression of the beans to the ground coffee I think would have been more than enough. The angle is a bit skewed, and might even be more effective from lower down perspective with the display of beans and grounds fanned out a bit more with the coffee cup at a point in the back of that. Now I have made a different photo haven't I? LOL . Sorry. :P

Technical: Could be sharper initially. It appears it was over sharpened in post processing. The lighting is not very appealing. It is causing harsh shadows, and glints on the metal.

Overall: It tells a story which is confusing to sort out at first. I think the idea was great though.

This photo effectively shows the process of making coffee, but I think there is too much in it to have a high impact. It's more of a diagram, something that could illustrate a page in a book on coffee making or something. It's well photographed, but not appealing.

Don't think you needed the equipment in the back. Make it completely tech by removing the beans. I think by trying to show both versions of the progression at once you dilute some of the impact unnecessarily. I like the idea and exposure; might be worth trying it again (or trying a different frame if you have alternates).

i get the impression this was lit by your celing light. i think you would have done better with sun light or some directional lamps
