 This is actually a very straightforward shot of the marks left in the sand on the south bank of the Thames in London as the tide retreats. I thought they loooked like a a steep valley landscape. The shot is flipped, and the contrast is played with quite extensively, but other than that not much is done. A little cloning of hot pixels here and there, perhaps.

I think a photographic approach to impressionism should be about far more than simply trying to imitate the style and look of the impressionist painters, and I do hope that most entries try to move in some other direction. It'll also be interesting to see exectly what the audience reaction is - I've deliberately left it a bit less contrasty that some earlier versions in order to preserve a sense of 'reality', at least in the feel of the tonal range (and indeed, once you know what the subject is, I think most will agree it's a very 'real' photograph). I expect most reaction to believe that it's a product of a more than generous use of filters and tricks.

Returning after the challenge. I would like to add that this is a full colour image, not a greyscale version of something. It is a touch desturated, but ony to the extent of around 30%

Challenge link: very strong - a great interpretation both as a concept and execution.

Image critique: just a lovely, creative notion, nicely treated and ambiguous.

Not quite sure if a B&W entry is ideal for this particular challenge. Be that as it may, I think your post processing works well to create a distinctive artsy look.

This is truly amazing, period. Nothing to add or subtract. Very smart choice of b/w, the colors would be distracting here.

I see mountains made of molehills and rain in the form of a wall of water. Looks like your were very close to the action too. Some of the wetness appears to have stuck on the lens. Hope you didn't get your camera soaked doing this one.

Nice patterns. Is this water? IMO it's more abstract than impressionistic. I like it anyway.

Just WOW ! This is just amazing. It doesn't have the color but the impact makes it work. The composition and the fact that it has such a wow impact makes this a winner ! Wonderful !

this does have an interesting feel to it, especially in the textures. i think i would have preferred it in color, though.

returning for comments:
This image is more remiscent of an pencil rendition. the image has great movement but lacks the bold effect desired in the impressionism style. The fine delicate texture detail is more the property of the classic masters of the old style. While this image borders on many styles, it does have enough interest to pull the eye and entertain it. Again, the image is good but the subleties and detail places it in a different class. Bumping up on its highly intriguing look. Intriging because it is a detailed image with great shading and yet no spatual depth which is what makes it special.

Very nice final result no matter how it was achieved. Odd that you would choose duotone, as most impression style pics are full of color.

An interesting effect, but not really to my taste. Texture comes across as too noisy, and doesn't really say impressionism to me. 6

Wow. Took me a long time to get what this was, but now... Wow.

Sand, on the beach. Lots of hints and innuendos hidden in there. Lovely.
