My grandfather is the man on the right. The photograph was taken in Limbourg, Belgium in December 1944. I assume the man on the left was a comrade of his. My grandfather was a combat engineer during World War Two. The identification tags display his original last name (which he shortened in 1947). Behind the photograph and identification tags is a Ukrainian Bible that was printed in 1910. I never knew about the items seen in the photograph until after he passed away.
