I think what hurt this shot score-wise is that people generally don't like to see people out of focus. The sleeve is a nice bright red and in good focus.
As I look at it, I think the composition works against it as well. It almost feels to me that it would work better if it was composed with right right side of the frame at the back of his head, and with more space in front of him - kind-of giving a space to "move" into... if that makes any sense.
