The pose is OK, but the focus is on the leaves instead of the dog's eyes. I infinitely prefer in a portrait to have sharp eyes so I can connect with the subject. |

It would help a LOT if the focus was on his/her eyes instead of on the collar. |

The crop is rather awkward, as it is not a particularly photogenic perspective as it makes your dog look much longer than it is. Try to get lower, so you are looking your dog face to face, it will create a much better perspective. Also, looks like there was a bit of difficulty obtaining focus, as your camera has focused on the leaves/scene behind the dog. Work on your composition/camera operation and this could be improved a lot.
This isn't a perfect example, but it shows how much livelier your dog can seem if you get lower to shoot the photo.  |
