Challenge: Fill the Frame V (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Lens: Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Location: My Backyard
Date: Sep 12, 2015
Aperture: ??
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/250
Date Uploaded: Sep 14, 2015

It was my first real attempt at macro work and was taken with my Canon 24-85mm f/3.5-4/5 USM held backward on my Canon D10. I don't have one of those filter mounts so I just held the lens up against the camera. The final image was taken from the in focus areas from multiple photos. due to the absolutely minuscule depth of field.
I was having a hard time getting my tripod in a good enough position to take this picture well so I hand held the camera.
I really want to get an actual macro lens some day to make all this easier and to be able to minimize the less focused areas but for what I had and it being my first real macro shot I don't think it turned out too bad.

Focus stacking. Yes that is what it is called. This was the technique that I used. I tried to describe it but turns out I did just about as good of a job in describing it as I did with the actual technique. ;)
My problem was that with the lens flipped around (only way to get even close to the proper magnification) the depth of field was so small and I didn't get the pics with the focus in the exact right spot so there are a lot of holes that are completely out of focus.

Thanks Sid for the ideas. I have been striving to find the way to make shots more and more interesting and better composed so your tips are very appreciated!

*Hello from Sid and the Critique club*

An interesting image that does meet the challenge.

Having read your comments I think you made the best job you could given the circumstances you were working under. This is obviously, as I'm sure you appreciate, not the best way of attempting this, your image has very little if anything of sharp enough focus and detail to appeal. There is another method you could have tried which I think would have been a lot easier and more successful it is called focus stacking. Basically you would have used the lens as normal with a small aperture you would take several images together each at a slightly closer position and then combined them together in PS to create an image that has sharp focus throughout.

I think you could have improved the composition of the image by using the diagonal for the stem of the feather this would have made the image more dynamic and interesting. A white or light background would have given you a high key image which would also have increased its impact and appeal.

Sorry you didn't get any comments during the challenge, I hope this makes up for it. Thanks for your submission, Sid
