Greetings from the Critique Club:
Composition:
This in my opinion is a great candid shot of a child leaning over the bathtub with his boats lined up. It's fairly cool in that respect. The way the child is looking down forces you to look there too, so the focus of the photograph is definitely on the boats. I think to make the composition better you could have moved over a bit to the right, so you didn't have the wall on the left side.
Background:
The bathtub, and the tiles. The tiles are over exposed a bit from the light above. I'm not sure if you used the flash or not. The tiles also seem to get lost under the water and the boats. The bathtub line could have been level to show different depths of the photograph. What is distracting is the wall on the left of the childs head.
Technical Processing:
I like the black and white, but I think that maybe you lose a bit of the depth and the the point of the photograph. I like the smooth softer focus of the shot, and the DOF is pretty good. I am very fond of duotone at the moment, did you try that? Maybe some levels and curves to actually bring out your subject matter more?
My opinion:
I like this picture, but I agree with what somebody else in that the subject matter didn't seem to fit, even though there were some square elements in the photo, they didn't seem to stick out. Great photo, I hope to see more from you in the future! |

This perspective really had me confused at first. How did it look in color, would that have helped make it a little more obvious? |

Cute shot, however it doesn't have too many intersting features. I'll give it a 6 because there are obvious squares in the photo. Jacko. |

This is among my favorite three images for this week. Thank you for daring to venture into candid informal territory. Absolutely wonderful personable family mood. A priceless moment that to me blows away any studio shot here. This image has real value and staying power to me. It brings out the longings of childhood and rekindles family memories. A very powerful emotional image that should strike a heart chord in everyone. Even if the photo was dismal technically I still would rate it high because of its extraordinary moment of casual humanity. But the foto is very competent by all other photographic measures, too. Focus, exposure, choice of B&W, tonal rendition, composition, you name it...near perfection in a nutshell. I really really love the feel of roundness and contours in the skin tones and their contrast to the water ripples and tub. You should be very pleased with this photoghaph no matter what the rating. No master photographer could do better. Hope many others rave madly about the foto too. Good luck |

I just don't see the purpose of this picture. |

Don't understand how the subject of this photo is square. The subject seems to be either the boy or the little toys, neither of which is square. Weird angle. |

Cute idea, just too harsh of a flash. |

Are the tiles in this the squares? The toy boats seem to be more the subject. Also that glare from the floor is distracting. |
