It would be a 5 from me as it is very average in both subject and everything else.
Which is good enough and it came about middleish in the final call.
The colors are its best asset in my view.
All good as you get better as time passes.

As Kobba said, the color of the sky is beautiful, but other than that, there really is nothing special about it. There's nothing "wrong" with the image - the oversaturation may be intentional and to your taste. That's part of our individual choices when creating an image. And these choices will please some and annoy others.
When we start out here, we're trying new techniques, accomplishing things we've not done previously, producing better images than ever before. And we're thrilled with our progress.
But then we put them in a challenge and often they just don't compare. Especially in a FS, where everyone is entering their best from an entire month.
Try to never lose site of pleasing yourself first, even though the scores make that tough :) |

Overall, I like it. A center composition can be bold and interesting, if done right. This meets that.
However, there were two main dis-tractors:
1. There is too much deep black on the bottom. Cropping that could have helped.
2. The saturation is pushed too high. The colors seem to be neon. While I'm sure this was a colorful event, I doubt it had this kind of saturation. I got back to know of my photos from a few years ago where I did the same thing. I learned a lot from that photo :) |
Yea, when I upload to DPC the image looks sooo overly saturated so I need to go into photoshop and look into that. I agree for sure, way oversaturated!
Thanks for the comment and advice. Im proud of it, and I think the square crop and it being centered works perfectly too! |

I did not vote in the last free study but this would have gotten a 5 from me. The color of the sky is amazing and just stunning, but other then that there really is nothing spectacular about the photo. I have been a fan of the square crop from my film days, but it has to be the right photograph to really make it work. In this case it does not, having the tree filling the entire frame and dead center is not a very interesting composition. If you would have used a different crop and backed up from the tree, putting it to one side of the frame it would have made a much more interesting composition and would have gotten a higher score from me. Without actually seeing it, I would guess I would have given you a 6 or 7 depending on how it looked. I entered a tree photo with a square crop, maybe if you had done something similar to this it would have done better.
