Few years ago I tried this with my old D90 which were not good enough for the job.
Now I put my D750 to the test and did a lot better, but still need brighter lens to get the result I want.

This geyser is erupting about every 4–8 minutes 15 – 20 m high, sometimes up to 40 m high.
The water moving on, ca 22 m/s so this is not an easy task in the midle of the night.

eruption and polar light combined - this might end in a Top 5 even when the most sharpness is not on the steam but in the foreground reflection (which I like really much!)

wow this is just beautiful and so strong.. colors are amazing and a very different scenery landscape, how lucky for you to have seen something this beautiful, and I bet you it was even more gorgeous in person.. this is one of my ribbon rinners for sure
