Sunshine after the snowstorm. Blowing snow on the peaks. This large mule deer buck was with a herd of 30 other deer. There is strength in numbers. Canon 5Dmk3, Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM, f/5.6, 1/3200s, ISO 400, lens focal length 400mm. 12/27/14 8:24am.
27 votes below average on a good image. I'm routinely seeing the same votes of "3" and "4" on every challenge entry. This is what is wrong with DPC.

I think what he meant was that this photo offers only face value. Nothing open to interpretation or imagination.
It's a genre not everyone likes, which would account for some of the lower votes I guess. Still, 6 and higher would mean those voters thought it above average.
I didn't vote this one but I would have given it a 6 for the pose, light and fairly clean background. The focus does look like it was pretty far behind the buck, though. Had it been on the head, I would say at least a 7.
Technically 66 votes below the average, and only 27 below the mode :-)
I'll give my reason for voting below your average though: I find images like this boring. Having looked at it once I would learn nothing new from it on a second, or third viewing. I simply cannot justify giving high votes for images I deem as such.
Thanks for your comments. There is a lot for you to learn from this imageâ€Â¦narrow depth of field, asymmetrical composition, natural lighting, white balance, selective focus, eye catch glint, dynamic range, control of shadow and highlight detailsâ€Â¦ to name a few. However, if you feel this is just too boring, you must live in a different world than mine. I can't help you. I can't help the "66 votes below the average". It is what it is. There is nothing new under the sun. Cynicism and hypocrisy about good photography is what is wrong with DPC.
