 I was planning to go to the zoo for a shot of golden lion tamarins or maybe green and purple poison dart frogs. Anything to avoid a flower. Unfortunately I couldn't spare the time and was resigned to skipping this challenge. Then on deadline day I let the dog out and noticed some iridescent long-legged flies on an azalea by the back porch. Aha!

I used a handheld, non-stabilized macro lens with an extension tube and a polarizer to enhance color, so I lost about 2.5 stops of light and it was extremely difficult to get a sharp photo. These skittish bugs weren't about to pose for a tripod, either. I had to push the ISO up to 3200 and still only managed a few keepers. DPC's 800px size limit worked to my advantage here since the smaller image helps mask a lack of detail.
