 One of the oldest methods of "long-range" communication. Isaac chose to form the letter "L" and I chose to use a shot with his back to me, both to hide his identity, and to help concentrate on the shapes and not the person. They should be square flags, but these were all I had.

Shot at the park next to Isaac's school; I got low to give as much feeling of "hilltop" as possible. I darkened it quite a bit, again to emphasize the shape, and because I like the way the little spot of sunlight catches his shirt and arms, almost making it look like he was in a spotlight or had someone holding a flashlight on him so he could be seen.

I thought about cropping a bit from the bottom, but decided I like the way the grass crops the bottom to leave an almost perfect square of sky, with Isaac's arms pointing to the corners.

Cropped a bit on the sides to 3:2 ratio. Tone curve. One application of USM at 66%/0.6 dia/TH=5. JPEG=8/10.

DPC has changed a lot since this challenge, as have the software and hardware/cameras. By today's tech standards, not the most "whiz bang" of images, but for you, I'm sure that it's a nice little "remember this day" sort of photo, and that's what snapshots are all about.

Thanks for the great comments, especially the ones about the sunlight on the shirt -- I really liked the way that came out. I would have cloned out the little spot (a crow, I think) but this was a Basic rules challenge.

I also left a lot of foreground grass to try and give the impression of a high hill, even though it's just about a 10-foot rise. For comparison, here's a square crop of the same photo.

Great idea.. the black spot over the head is a bit distracting, but still a well shot photograph.. bumping to 9.. hope it places in the top 10.

I would have preferred more sky and less grass personally, for a feeling of openness and space, but still very good. 7.
