When I was about two we moved into a custom-built redwood house designed by a friend of the family, located on a hill above Santa Rosa, California, nd reached by a narrow dirt road named for my mother.
Only later was it discovered that there was a large "underground lake" below the hill, causing it to be unstable. One day as we went to drive into town, we found that a large section of the roadway had simply fallen away.
The house was actually disassembled and rebuilt in the neary town of Cotati, and my grandfather lived in it until I was in high school.
