I'm guessing this is a more common phobia than many think, so let's see how it pans out.
I dug the hole in the ground in an old herb garden, where the soil is mostly sand and fairly loose. Dug down about 3ft and 4ft square.
Then I figured out the angle I would need to capture the victim's helplessness and efforts to block or stave off the person doing the dirt-slinging. Siggy to the rescue! Love that wide-angle lens! I dug a little alcove a little further back of where I was positioned for the camera to nestle in, and used a baggie with a carefully sized hole in the bottom for protection so loose sand wouldn't get into the camera's workings.
Then I had to get someone to shovel dirt on me. Carefully, of course. I did two shoots, one with Ryan which was OK but I didn't shoot wide enough. Also he's too nice a guy, and a bit too recognizable with his mane of curly hair. And the too-new style of jacket he was wearing...nah.
I needed someone a little more menacing, with a little more of that Anton Shigurh (bad guy from No Country For Old Men, brilliantly portrayed by Javier Bardem) vibe. Yet it also had to be someone I trusted to not get too carried away with burying me.
Enter Dave, a longtime friend with the height and physical presence needed for ominous looming, and a fantastic, craqgy face reminescent of Neil Young. He's also a born and bred country boy so he's not afraid of a little hard work, and is always messing about in shop clothes anyway. So, once we got the giggles out - I ruined some early shots by laughing - he just got right into it and happily flung sand as per direction. I didn't even have to ask him for any special expressions, I just took what he gave me, which was great. Thanks Dave!!! :-)
