The Voortrekker Monument, Monument Hill, Pretoria, South Africa.
This massive granite structure is prominently located on a commanding hilltop, and was raised to commemorate (in honorem) the Voortrekkers who left the Cape Colony between 1835 (MDCCCXXXV) and 1854. It was mooted on the Day of The Covenant/Vow (Blood River Day) 16/12/1888 and building began in 1937, 2 years before the outbreak of WWII, it was completed in 1949. The architect was Gerard Moerdijk.
Outtake
Post Roll-Over: I cannot understand the 1's, 2's, 3's and 4's. The image is not a shoehorn, it is HDR'd (as are Blue, Red and Yellow in this challenge) and it is an ancient building with ancient connections and connotations. Perhaps classic Latin was a mistake for armchair historians too lazy to Google? Perhaps the slight halo around the building? (Can't be that because the camel in third place is halo'd around the legs.) Oversharpened? Last sky entry I got nailed for a lack of drama or clouds...this time? Low voters haven't got the Kahunas to crawl out from under their rocks methinks.

Ek verstaan nie die score nie maar miskien het die plek nie soveel waarde vir die ander DPCers nie. Ek dink dit is fantasties. Verskriklike mooi foto. |

Beautiful clouds, Harvey. I do like the colour-jumps from the statue to the building to the sky. Very dramatic.
The viewing angle also adds to the drama. 7.

Nice view of this South African monument, but perhaps not as old as the title suggest (MCMXXXVII ?) |

I like the contrast between the rich blue sky and redish-brown stone of the structure. The framing and perspective is nicely done. |
