There's not much as far as lanscapes in this area. The city is rather small, and there's not really any mountain. But we do have a muddy river, which is interesting during winter. The sun came out for the only time in the week, so i was able to get this shot just in time.

This is my first challenge, so i'm just having fun for now.

Levels changed a bit, slight increase in saturation, unsharp mask and border added in PS, NeatImage to reduce noise.

You actually made it look rather nice - not gloppy and muddy like it really is!! Congrats on that!!

I'm always intrigued by this river... the mud, the color of the water, the path down the middle that the tide carves. And it's even more interesting when it's iced up.

Hey -- I went diving in the lake portion!! Check it out at Ice diving, anyone???

COMPOSITION
I think the strongest part of this composition is the different "layers" of the picture that are so distinct. In the foreground is the snow, then the river then the sky. Also, because they are not straight horizontal or vertical, it gives a sense of "motion" the picture. My only wish is wanting to actually see the bend of the river. I think it would have been an exceptionally strong picture with a horizontal crop/framing that showed the "elbow" that is just out of the frame in this shot. Of course, I don't know what may have been there, etc. but the current framing leaves me trying to lean to the left and right and see more, kind of like looking out of a small window.

TECHNIQUE
The focus and lighting are right on. Exposure is good. You have captured good detail without causing dark spots with no detail, or blowing out the bright parts. I also like the gradiant-like blue sky. It looks natural, and not overly blue.

OVERALL EFFECT
I think that though the portrait perspective adds some interest to this shot, it also leaves the viewer feeling a bit edgy or left out of something. Of course, if this is response you were after, then you did it well. It is an awesome shot, and though you say there is not much interesting there, I think this river was an exellent choice for the challenge. Good work, and I look forward to see more of your stuff.

Thanks for the comments everyone, and good eye jacko, that is indeed the Peticodiac River, in all it's muddy glory.

Wow, looks just like Peticotiac River in Moncton, where I'm from. Good shot, I like the curves. Jacko

Man, it looks cold! Good use of the foreground to set up the shot.

Wonderful Composition and the lighting is great. I love the saturation of the colors and the curves, the curves are wonderful. Only thing that would have made this better would have been pristeen snow -- but you take what you can get, right? Nice work.

Interesting. It may have been hard to achieve a different effect, especially in the apparent conditions, but the colour is a little cold. 6.

Nice colors. I would have preferred less shadows.. as if you could grab the sun and move it around. heh I like the fact that you copped this portrait-style and not landscape-style... new perspective.
