 Background:
Leather scrap hanging from door. Christmas lights hanging from door as well.

Object:
Brass container set about 1 - 1.5 meters from the background to get proper focus. I set the camera to manual. Set the aperture to the maximum available to get the blurred background.

Camera setup about 1 meter in front of the cup.

Post Processing:
Minimum adjustments to exposure and color in RAW.

The background was left alone for the most part (I spot healed a few spots on the upper orange circle), and all of the editing was done on the cup.

In PS CS3 I used an adjustment layer and selected the cup using the polygonal tool. I filled the layer with "black" and then used the paintbrush tool to paint the cup "white". This brought the brightness of the cup up.

I then used unsharp mask on the cup only with a high radius and lower intensity. This brought out the engravings on the cup.

I love the way the bokeh appears to effervesce out of the vessel - a touch of magic in keeping with your title.

Beautiful use of bokeh as a part of the subject. Where foregrounds and backgrounds meet to make something new is something only camera's can hold for a viewer to see. Beautifully done.
