Challenge: Stopped Motion II (Advanced Editing II) Camera: Sony DSC-F717 Location: Eindhoven, in my kitchen Date: Sep 15, 2004 Aperture: f2.5 ISO: 400 Shutter: 1/500 Galleries: Food and Drink Date Uploaded: Sep 15, 2004

This was hard! The lighting in my kitchen was hardly sufficient to get a fast shutter speed, so I had to crank up the ISO to 400, hence the background noise (and even then it was still quite a bit underexposed). When the drop was actually falling instead of just hanging I still got some movement blur of the drop at 1/500s, so I stuck with this one. Also, it turned out to be very difficult to correctly time the squeezing of the lemon. This was the last of 51 tries, after I had filled up the squeezed lemon with tap water :-). The lemon is sitting on a glass cutting board, in a puddle of juice and water from all my previous tries. Of course I forgot to adjust the white balance, which is why the greyish tiles on my kitchen wall have turned into a nice blue background during postprocessing. Oh, and I had to use a close-up 4+ filter because my Sony wouldn't focus this close by at a zoom of 18mm.
Postprocessing:
Levels.
Dodging on the squeezed lemon and on a shadow on the rim of the other lemon.
Blurring on a copy of the original layer to remove some of the noise.
Erasing the lemon parts and the drop from this blurred copy to have only the background blurred.
Resizing and unsharp mask to get the drop better in focus, at the expense of some halo-ing around the lemon. |

What a tart shot. I would have preferred the thumb cropped out. |

Great colors - and good capture of the action, albeit not exactly a lot of action. It would be better without the finfer/thumb showing at all. |

Nicely done...I like that bright yellow contrasting with the background...tip of finger is slightly distracting..I would either add more of the finger or take it out 8 |

i would either include more of the hand, or none at all. the very slight presence is somewhat distracting. otherwise, nice exposure, colors and stop motion. |
