This photo took a bit of planning to get everything together. First I had to find a feather. At my work there is a training room name after Shakespeare, and outside of this room is a little display which includes a hat that has a feather. This isn't technically a writing implement, but I can make it look like one.
Then I needed some text. I wrote some random text in a scribe style font, and printed it out. I then took this bright white paper and rubbed dirt into it by dropping it on the garage floor and grinding it around.
The ink is actually just some water with blue food coloring.
I brought my paper, ink, and camera to the Shakespeare exhibit and set everything up. The wood is actually the stage, and the warm lights you see reflecting off the glass and feather are some warm display lights.
I then setup a flash with a soft box on camera left, to help light the feather and show off the details. Very little of that light was allowed to spill onto the scene, as I wanted the nice natural light filtering in the windows to provide the key light, and everything else is fill or rim light.
I really like the way this turned out. The editing was minor, just some tweaks in Aperture. The most editing was a little coloring to the paper to make it look a little more aged. |

would prefer to see the quill in the ink, not just a feather, otherwise would be fantastic |

I do like your photograph. Each person does have their own composition style. With that being said I'm a little off with the subject being focused on just part of the feather. I, and this is just myself, Would have included a subject matter of the tip and maybe the ink well with the feather fading out of focus as well as the letter. My thoughts but good exposure! |
