I am pretty knew here and haven't interacted much. When I saw this shot I had to click on it to appreciate it better.
I then read the varying comments about the subject and quite confused at what I perceive a sad imbalance in what we respond too.
I believe millions of people are severely hurt by pornography. If someone submitted an "artistic" photo with someone holding a porn magazine, instead of a gun, would there be any reaction at all? I wonder??? People hurt People, with whatever is at hand.
I grew up with guns on the farm. They are a tool, as other things are. I believe these video games that many of these young adults have played for years do more to promote violence, and need to be severely regulated, not guns.

I don't like snakes. I wish they did not exist. But, when I see a photo of one, I vote on the image quality. I don't think every snake image has an underlying message or do I think the person who photographed the snake is evil.
I really, really hate snakes, though. :D
This is a fabulously done image. The technicals are wonderfully satisfied. |

I hate guns but it doesn't mean this not a very good image.
Otherwise we couldn't watch western movies :)
It looks like a movie scene (as many of the front page images, included mine).
Congrats on the WD red! |

+++ What tanguera said. Great image. Congrats on the red.
To add, this is a success on many fronts. You won a ribbon, you invoked strong opinions. |

if anyone felt offended
not offended but my dislike of guns does affect my interaction with and interpretation of the picture. if photography is viewed as art and not just a technical process of capturing an image, then it isn't just about the technical aspects of the photo but how the viewer interacts with it as well.
I think that there are a few examples in the comments below of how the opinions of the viewer affect the interaction.
You wanted to convey the good guy "sheriff" holding his ground against the outlaws but more than a few comments below show a completely different interpretation despite your title. It is described as 'ominous', 'menacing', I used 'vigilante' and others referenced "Deliverance". This would indicate that on some level with some viewers your image failed to convey a 'good guy' impression. Perhaps the absence of a clear 'bad guy' in the image contributes as well as the fact that your character is wearing a black hat which image is well embedded in cowboy symbolism as belonging to the 'bad guy' and not the 'good guy'.
Something to think about anyway.

An ominous mood to this. Congrats on an excellent image and ribbon.
ETA: I just noticed participants score this image below 6. That seems completely crazy to me. I am not a huge fan of guns, but come on. This is a fantastic shot.

Technical excellence gets this an 8, but I don't like guns and I don't like the vigilante stance of the person. The light ray effect by the right hand is also a bit too bright and distracting so I'm afraid when I add in how I feel about the picture my score drops. |

I love this image. The silhouette and shadows are great. Lighting is awesome. I like how he seems to be "holding" the light. |
