I've seen how this technique is done a few times elsewhere and it is very effective, and you expertly used it here for a great photo and yes a wonderful christmas card, simple and elegant, but doesnt take away from those who used the whole family or themselves as per the challenge, congratulations nonetheless :O) and truly Merry Christmas :O)

@mike -- it's just subject to background distance. the 50mm 1.4 produces beautiful bokeh anyway, but it's certainly helped a lot by the distance between subject and background.

In the BTS shot, she's closer to the lights than she was when I actually took the image. For the real shot she was slightly passed the halfway point on the other side of the bed -- the side I shot from.

Cute! the bokeh helps draw your attention right to the little one's bright eyes. I like the neutral border color choice.

very nice! I would like a square cut even more - so that only the glittering part remains as a background

i used a similar background for my "real" Christmas cards. I'd be curious as to how far away the lights were, i could get mine to blur out like that.

nice job

Cute model - i recognize her from the autumn photoshoot you had linked in the forums before - i'm sure your daughter will love having these pictures in the future!
The backdrop is great, i'm curious if it's a drop or just hanging lights - i'm looking to get a similarly colored dropcloth with a light pattern like this (but fully wide spread for the lights). If this is a backdrop, i'd love to hear where you got it from.
