CRITIQUE CLUB CRITIQUE

COMPOSITION
I, for one, liked how you chose to portray this song. I understood that you were saying, "The dog was born to be wild, but is not able to live that way." I think the placement of the subject in the right side of the frame works well, as it gives the dog "somewhere" to look, and doesn't look like she is going to run out of the frame. I also like how she fills up the frame and her face is a prominent feature of the picture. Compositionally, I think this is a strong photograph.
TECHNIQUE
You have a shallow depth of field which works in contrasting the dog with the background. However, teh dog also looks a bit blurry. The clearest point of focus is the leash/lead at the bottom of the frame. I think if you had gotten the eyes razor sharp focused, since they seem to be a focal point, and that is where the viewer is expecting sharpness, the rest of the focus issue wouldnn't be a problem.
I find the coloring interesting. It is not "pink" as some other commentors said, but it does have a slight orangish/red cast to it. It is just my opinion, but a straight bw/greyscale may have worked better. The lighting is good, but with a little more, perhaps you could have used a higher aperture number and that would have helped the focus issue.
OVERALL EFFECT
I feel that you met the challenge in a creative, offbeat way, and I am afraid you score may have suffered a little by it. Her eyes look so forlorn, to me, it looks like she is desiring something else. Maybe if you had done a negative, or some really funky post-processing, you could have gotten a "cujo" look and more viewers would relate. I suspect, though, that the coloring didn't appeal to many people, and the focus issue took away from the general quality of the picture. |

Hi,
Well, this isn't quite the result I was hoping for with this picture, and I think it probably has a lot to do with the title being "inappropriate." Sylandrix had it right the second time, though - I kind of intended that, with the very obvious leash, etc. I thought it'd be apparent after a little consideration that I meant the title to be ironic - dog on a front porch on a leash, with an expression of longing, titled born to be wild - but I guess that just didn't come through.
And it may be a difference in display settings, but the tone is decidedly not pink. Nor is the dog stoned. And I just couldn't induce her to ride a Harley.
Thank you for your comments,
Martin

The dog does not appear as sharp as I would of liked. A different colour tone to the image may have been a better choice. jgillard6 |

To me the sepia tones don't do much for this picture. |

Good title, to fit the picture. Not too keen on the pink tint though |

Nope, born to be domesticated. Nice photo, interesting in sepia, but challenge not really met, IMO. 4 Swash |

looks like a great pet, you can see it in his/her eyes. if this photo was taken outdoors it would fit the title better, out in the wild. |

When I hear this song I think more of bikers riding their Harleys down the road. |

doesn't look very wild with that leash.. and the color's superfluous. |

Suffers from sharpness problems. Tone, contrast are very good, as well as cropping, de-emphasized background, composition and canine expression :) However, it appeared to me only loosely fitting the song title, since its a domesticated animal, on a leash and in a setting that appear indoors, unless the meaning is the animal is born to be wild but cannot and never will live in a wild environment. Further proof interpretation is extremely subjective on the viewer :). |

Destined to be too soft and with a cluttered background. |

Don't make me laugh. He doesn't have a wild hair on him. He's a pussycat. Not too sure what I think about the pink toned sepia for this. May have to come back later and adjust. 5 PTL |

I love the expression on this beautiful pooch! The image is not as clear as it could be though. |
