Photographer’s Notes
It is a dark and stormy night. I’m home alone while my wife is in the middle of a three-day conference on the other side of the state. I’m watching a live (how quaint) program on TV in a mostly darkened room and notice a soft light falling on some pottery we have on the mantle above the fireplace. The fireplace is steel and reflects almost no light. The pottery contrasts nicely with the black background. I punch record on the DVR and grab my camera and tripod.

I nearly always shoot HDR brackets these days. If you’ve followed me you know why. If you shoot HDR you know why. If you’re a party of the third part, the exercise is left to the reader. In this case I liked the tone-mapped HDR version better than anything I could do with any of the bracket shots.

I feel like I’m in a bit of a voting rut. I’ve been shooting more for me than for scores and my taste at the moment has diverged from DPC-pop, or DPC-grunge, or DPC-blur, or … well, you get the idea. And I like this in that same non-DPC way. Which means, this will probably score poorly. It is also pretty abstract. And as Rocky is fond of telling Bullwinkle, “That trick never works!” But then a tiny voice inside me whispers, maybe this is the image that will cross over. The eternal optimist!

Enjoy.
