Really did not expect to be so high at 27th in a FS especially with the ugly white blob at top. Thank you for your comments and votes but especially the comments! The fact that it is also the highest placed wildlife (bird) image nestled amongst some magnificent landscape/seascape/portrait/street images in this FS is also VERY satisfying.

The Grey Crowned Crane (Balearica regulorum) is a bird in the crane family Gruidae. It occurs in dry savannah in Africa south of the Sahara, although it nests in somewhat wetter habitats. This animal does not migrate. He/She was photographed in the Austin Roberts Memorial Bird Sanctuary in the heart of Pretoria. I train BiF and Camera Technique there for the day clients join me for a true African bush photo "safari".

Congratulations on a very strong placement! I voted this a 9 too. I didn't notice the "blob" either, did not affect my vote.

FINE shot. I gave you an 8 but it would have been a 9 or 10 had I ever suspected this had been shot in the wild. We have them in our zoo and I once had an opportunity to photograph one free in the aviary there, on the railing of the walkway and quite unafraid. Even had time to change lenses and could probably have touched it. So, though this is better than any of mine, I wasn't as impressed as I might have been. I'm really sorry as your image is first rate.

What blob?
Seriously, not too distractive in the presence of such a royal bird.

Good one, Harvey. The eyes pop so well, the blob is not even seen.

On my Bucket List Sandy. Now to squeeze it in to a trip. When do they start pairing September already?

They nest in wakkerstroom! Should come and see the flocks when they gather prior to pairing! Their mating dance iis a beautiful thing to watch!

sharp, good colors, and great backgorund. Might clone out the white thing at the top as it may catch an eye or two. I like the square crop, but wonder what it would look like bring the right side in a bit more and the bottom up, as I really like the negative space you get at the left and top but that falls off a bit on the right.

just a few cents there, but nice.
