This was truly one of my favorites, of course, I just love horses! I had the same thought when I first saw the photo since the dark hill did draw my eye down from the horse. However, I scrolled the photo so that was cropped out, and it lost some of the impact. Taking that shoulder point out, also changes the 'look' and feel of the shot. Having that shoulder in there, gives her length and makes her apepar more statuesque. I decided the hill was a good contrast for the light reflecting off her her shoulder. Beautiful shot! Congratulations! |
I went through almost the identical thought process, and ending up coming to the same conclusion. I love this image, and in fact, most strong, powerful images of horses, especially yours.
My big question is: when, OH WHEN, am I going to get to see you in the top three on the home page??? With your images, you should have been there long ago; your work is stunning and inspiring. Oh well, it's only a matter of time! |

Thanks! Agreed, the hill works; we get nice early evening light, so it's easy to get the "catchlight" in their eyes. I shoot shutter priority and am constantly switching speeds (and ISO) as the shadows deepen--my models don't follow direction very well and relocate on a whim.
This image was pretty much out of the camera except a little Dfine for noise reduction/levels/a bit of saturation, USM@50%, then toning.
Am delighted at the top ten finish, thanks for all the comments too! |

And again a picture I have to comment on.
It's hard to score so many pictures in this challenge, so I comment on only a few I really like or dislike.
This one I realy like! |

Lovely shot, a good strong backlight shot that conveys an almost enigmatic mood. I wonder if it would look better with a little cropped off the bottom and (if possible) a little mor sky at the top? |

Great photo! I like the focus and tone. I would have cropped the black hill out of the background, but that is just a personal preference. |

This is truly a gorgeous photograph. The backlighting works wonderfully well, the subject is dark, but details can still be seen (and I use a pretty dark monitor), and the pose is fantastic. The sepia tone was a great choice as well. Great job. |

How did you get this horse to focus that well? I think this is a great picture. I give it a 9. Good luck. |

Love everything about this. The lighting (although directional, and not backlighting) falls beautifully on your subject. |

Lovely shot, the horse is howing great emotions and turning towards the light, looks really nice, but I don't get the name though. (but it does not matter in my voting ) |

Nice angle. It's good you picked an Arab for this shot; it gives more details to the shadows. |
