| I really like the idea of this photo and I really think it has a lot of interesting things going for it. I don't think that the reflected rose is necessary. Maybe there is a reason for it that I may be missing. What I like is the pure black background and the kiss and the rose or roses seemingly floating in space. But there seems to be a disconnect between them. This is a difficult challenge and I'm not sure how I would resolve it. One idea I have is to show a side view of yourself with extreme backlighting so that only the edge of your profile is showing. You are wearing the bright red lipstick and the rose is close to your lips in a close up view. As it is now, the idea is a good one but it isn't being conveyed strongly enough. I think you handled the sharpness and DOF very well. The contrast is good and the colors are vivid. This seems to be exactly what you intended and for that you did a very nice job in executing your idea. I applaud you for taking a very difficult concept and creating a very interesting photo out of it. I think you have the right elements, they just need to be arranged a little differently to produce a more compelling photo. You are obviously trying to be very original with your photography and it may not always relate to everyone but I believe it is much better to error on the side of creativity rather than trying to be too safe and mainstream. dang, now i cant get this song out of my head! ;)
the funny part about this photo is, that to me, the image comes across as much darker and dreamier than I imagine Seal intended! who knows tho--it is interesting to see how different people interpret music.
this photo has a very surreal look--the contrast is wonderful--i love the lighting and the choice of black background. the perfect clarity of the rose in the center contrasts so strikingly with the slightly blurry lips in the corner with the slightly blurry rose in the foreground---making me feel like i am seeing some warped scene right out of twin peaks or some such. looking at it from such an artsy way--like it is an image straight from a bizarre dream--makes me realize that i can recommend nothing to change this photo--i think it is wonderful! i can imagine that it will be one that has to appeal to the viewer tho--and it is my experience that a lot of people just dont get david lynch! ;) hehehe!

| The only thing that bothers me about the shot is that the light on the roses is perhaps a bit strong in contrast to the softer lip print. Putting my browser window over it to crop out the left most rose and making it a portrait shot with just the middle rose and the lip print also, in my opinion, makes it a stronger composition. Gives more of an illusion that the rose made the kiss print. The lip print is either somewhat smudged or blurred in contrast to the sharp edges of the rose. All of these factors culminate into a score of: 6 |
